This August, SIX is hosting a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/socialinnovationexchange.org\/legacy\/insights\/six-funders-node-retreat-strategic-foresight\">retreat&nbsp;<\/a>with our Funders Node to explore how they can fund strategically with future foresight and adaptive capacity for emergent change. Below is a selection of readings that provide an introduction to foresight, its connection to philanthropy, and various methods and tools for use.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Report<\/strong>:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/foresightinternational.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/AFI_Monograph_09.pdf\">Foresight and Philanthropy: Towards a New Alliance<\/a>&nbsp;(Section 1), by Richard Slaughter, Serafino De Simone, and Gio Braidotti, published in 2005. One of the first works on the interaction between foresight and philanthropy, this document gives a thorough overview on what strategic foresight is and how and why philanthropy can and should be engaging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Report<\/strong>:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forumforthefuture.org\/sites\/default\/files\/The_Report.pdf\">Horizon Scanning to Improve Social Impact<\/a>, by Rockefeller Foundation and Forum for the Future. Explores the what, why, and how of scenarios.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Report<\/strong>:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/icscentre.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/ExploringtheFuture_2016_web.pdf\">Exploring the Future<\/a>, by the International Civil Society Centre, published 2016. This report gives an overview of 10 emerging trends that will affect International Civil Society in the Future and discusses horizon scanning itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Blog<\/strong>:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rockefellerfoundation.org\/blog\/behind-scenes-how-identify-next-100\/\">How to Identify the Next $100 Million Program<\/a>, by Judith Rodin, President of The Rockefeller Foundation 2005-2017, Published September 17, 2014. Discusses Rockefeller\u2019s \u2018scan and search\u2019 process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Report<\/strong>:&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.4qpartners.com\/emergence.html\">A Whole Greater than Its Parts: Exploring the Role of Emergence in Complex Social Change<\/a>, by Fourth Quadrant Partners (4QP), published in April 2018. Uses seven case studies to draw insights on what emergence means, looks like in practices and promises to achieve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Blog<\/strong>:&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.effectivephilanthropy.org\/i-spent-a-week-in-the-future-and-there-werent-any-foundations-there\/\">I Spent a Week in the Future, and There Weren\u2019t any Foundations There<\/a>, by Trista Harris, published 14 February 2016. She lays out a three-step process to help philanthropic leaders escape from the busyness of today to create the communities of tomorrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Playbook<\/strong>:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegeniusworks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Playbook-for-Strategic-Foresight-and-Innovation-A4.pdf\">A Playbook for Strategic Foresight and Innovation<\/a>, published in 2013. This playbook targets the strategic manager, the person who is responsible for innovation, and offers a hands-on guide for modeling, designing, and leading a company&#8217;s next radical innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Blog<\/strong>:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ssir.org\/articles\/entry\/second_curve_philanthropy\">Second Curve Philanthropy<\/a>, by Marina Gorbis, published on 1 December 2014. Describes the Institute for the Future\u2019s research on the future of philanthropy, which finds a large gap between the world of philanthropy and today\u2019s world of social action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>E-Book<\/strong>:&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.futuremotions.nl\/free-e-book\/\">Introduction to Strategic Foresight<\/a>&nbsp;from Future Motions, 2018.
