Data has the potential to help us work at a larger scale than ever before, be more efficient, and solve problems more effectively. Despite this potential, data analytics and engagement in this new field remain out of reach for most social organisations, limiting its potential for social good.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most data remains in private hands, used to increase business efficiency and profitability. Although donations and open-data platforms are making data more accessible, extracting, cleaning, sharing, and processing the data in a meaningful way remains costly. Many third sector organisations lack the specialist capacity and infrastructure for storing data to engage with these new methods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/socialinnovationexchange.org\/legacy\/insights\/role-philanthropy-using-data-address-complex-challenges-global-scan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">global scan of data for social good initiatives<\/a>, we at the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.socialinnovationexhange.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Social Innovation Exchange<\/a>&nbsp;(SIX) found hundreds of innovative initiatives using data to transform lives and entire sectors. Some of these were supported by philanthropy, but not all. We identified seven ways philanthropy can help grow this field due to its unique position in society and ability to support innovation where others can\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Funding social data projects through traditional grants<\/strong>&nbsp;enables organisations to innovate, experiment, and scale projects.&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/globalfishingwatch.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Global Fishing Watch<\/a>, funding by the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.leonardodicaprio.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Leonardo Dicaprio Foundation<\/a>&nbsp;and others, uses satellite data, ships\u2019 transponders, and machine learning to monitor illegal fishing practices.<\/li><li><strong>Supporting enabling environments&nbsp;<\/strong>by funding data infrastructures, building capacity, and advocating for open-data enables growth of the field. The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/otf.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ontario Trillium Foundation<\/a>&nbsp;supports&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/transform.thesector.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Transform the Sector<\/a>&nbsp;in Canada, which aims to build a data-driven social sector through research and engaging with funders, nonprofits, and government.<\/li><li><strong>Acting as a convenor,&nbsp;<\/strong>foundations can encourage new data for good partnerships through their diverse networks. The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.minderoo.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Minderoo Foundation\u2019s<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eliminatecancer.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Eliminate Cancer Initiative<\/a>&nbsp;recently launched the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ucd.eliminatecancer.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Universal Cancer Databank<\/a>, a global platform for anonymised medical data that aims to help researchers find cures for rare cancers, bringing together global partners from government, research, and technology.<\/li><li><strong>Supporting new dataset creation&nbsp;<\/strong>helps provide evidence to influence funding decisions, programme design, and policy. Bloomberg Philanthropies\u2019&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.org\/program\/public-health\/data-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Data for Health<\/a>works with developing country governments to strengthen public health data to improve prioritisation of health challenges, develop policy, and track impact.<\/li><li><strong>Data philanthropy&nbsp;<\/strong>is an emergingpractice where private actors donate data or pro bono analytics expertise. The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/mastercardcenter.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MasterCard Center for Inclusive Growth<\/a>&nbsp;provided consumer spending data to researchers in the Middle East, enabling them to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/mastercardcenter.org\/insights\/understanding-political-violence-impacts-spending-patterns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>political violence.<\/li><li><strong>Supporting open-data platforms to map funding<\/strong>&nbsp;helps to identify gaps and opportunities and track progress. Organisations can publish their grants data with&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.threesixtygiving.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">360Giving<\/a>&nbsp;(UK), funded by&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.threesixtygiving.org\/2016\/07\/28\/360giving-campaign-for-open-data-in-grantmaking-receives-support-from-three-leading-uk-grantmakers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Big Lottery Fund<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/esmeefairbairn.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Esm\u00e9e Fairbairn Foundation<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/indigotrust.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Indigo Trust<\/a>, to build a better picture of the funding landscape and boost its impact.<\/li><li><strong>Integrating data and AI into foundations\u2019 operations<\/strong>&nbsp;can improve efficiency and effectiveness through smarter grant application sifting, smarter scans of issue areas to better understand where value can be added, and even providing philanthropic advice.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.philanthropy.ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ai<\/a>&nbsp;provides micro-scholarships to US students through an AI-based application system that removes the need for a panel of judges with possible biases.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Philanthropy shouldn\u2019t just rush to the newness and flashiness of data and emerging technology \u2013 there are serious questions to address around ethics and privacy and the need to define the problem before the solution.
