As a result, the concept of social innovation has gained momentum. But it isn\u2019t a new concept &#8211; people have always sought new and better ways of tackling social challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using innovation to address our biggest challenges is not a job for social sector organisations alone. Sometimes civil society provides the impetus for local, bottom-up, grassroots solutions.  Governments can also take the lead, by including citizens in policy making, or working across departments to redesign processes and remove red tape. In other cases, finance and private enterprise lead the change.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>At SIX, social innovation means taking a pluralist approach to solving society&#8217;s most complex challenges, using the best every sector has to offer. It often happens in between places and sectors. It involves people working together, bringing diverse experiences and perspectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What matters most, whether the innovation is coming from the public, private or third sector, or from a formal or informal institution, is that social innovation delivers new power relationships, disrupts the status quo, and delivers solutions that make a genuine and positive difference to people\u2019s lives. Our <a href=\"https:\/\/socialinnovationexchange.org\/legacy\/event\/six-summer-school-2016-in-colombia-innovation-in-polarised-societies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Summer School with Somos M\u00e1s<\/a> explored social innovation\u2019s potential to transform divided societies. Our <a href=\"https:\/\/socialinnovationexchange.org\/legacy\/programme\/six-summer-schools\/2012-adelaide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Adelaide Summer School<\/a> connected Australia to the rest of the world to explore the \u2018growing pains\u2019 of the social innovation movement. Our events in partnership with Hivos in <a href=\"https:\/\/socialinnovationexchange.org\/legacy\/learning-from-nairobi-the-city-as-a-hub-for-innovation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nairobi,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/socialinnovationexchange.org\/legacy\/inclusive-cities-of-the-future-experiences-of-zimbabwe-in-a-global-perspective\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Harare <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/socialinnovationexchange.org\/legacy\/reimagining-relationships-and-changing-systems-in-johannesburg-%ef%bf%bc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Johannesburg<\/a>, explored the relationship between the worlds of social innovation and international development.
