In Kenya, an HIV positive infant who does not receive anti-retroviral treatment (ART) has less than a 50% chance of surviving to the age of 2. The Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) in partnership with Hewlett Packard (HP) anounced in 2010 an agreement to provide technology that will capture, manage and return early infant diagnosis (EID) HIV test results in just one to two days after results are ready -- a significant improvement from the previous paper-based system, which took two to three months. This initiative is expected to save the lives of more than 100,000 infants in Kenya each year.
